چکیده

The visions of ambient intelligence demand novel interaction paradigms that enable designers and system developers to frame and manage the dynamic and complex interaction between humans and environments populated with physical (real) and virtual (digital) objects of interest. So far, many proposed approaches have adhered to a devicecentric stance when including virtual objects into the ambient ecology; a stance inherited from existing interaction paradigms for mobile and stationary interactive devices. In this article, we introduce egocentric interaction as an alternative approach, taking the human agent’s body and mind as the center of reference. We show how this interaction paradigm has influenced both the conception and implementation of the easy ADL ecology, comprising of smart objects, a personal activity-centric middleware attempting to simplify interaction given available resources, ambient intelligence applications aimed at everyday activity support, and a human agent literally in the middle of it all. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The Role of Participatory Workshops in Investigating Narrative and Sound Ecologies in the Design of an Ambient Intelligence Audio Display

We describe two participatory workshops conducted to support design decisions in the making of the audio display for an ambient intelligent game platform. The workshops discussed here explore specific issues of players’ interactions with sound and auditory display design. The workshops helped move our design process forward by specifying the role of narrative and sound ecologies in our design. ...

ec(h)o: Ecologies For Designing Playful Interaction

This paper discusses the design issues of playful interaction within a museum through the study of a museum guide prototype that integrates a tangible interface, audio display, and adaptive modeling. We provide an overview of our case study, summary of our user evaluation, and discuss our use of ecological approaches from the domains of acoustics, ethnography and information technology in order...

Alan Dix Artefact Ecologies : Supporting Embodied Meeting Practices with Distance Access

Frameworks such as activity theory, distributed cognition and structuration theory, amongst others, have shown that detailed study of contextual settings where users work (or live) can help the design of interactive systems. However, these frameworks do not adequately focus on accounting for the materiality (and embodiment) of the contextual settings. Within the IST-EU funded AMIDA project (Aug...

Semi-tacit Adaptation of Intelligent Environments

This paper presents a semi-tacit adaptation system for implementing and configuring a new generation of intelligent environments referred to as adaptive ambient ecologies. These are highly distributed systems, which require new ways of communication and collaboration to support the realization of people’s tasks. Semi-tacit adaptation is based on a mixed initiative approach in human-system dialo...

A Personal Smart Space approach to realising Ambient Ecologies

One of the main aims of research in the area of ubiquitous or pervasive computing is that of dealing with the rapidly growing number of sensors, devices and artefacts in the user‟s environment, which have an increasing amount of intelligence built in and which can communicate via wireless technologies. To assist in this the concept of Ambient Ecologies has been proposed as a metaphor for modell...
